“What is the difference between this gate and the previous two gates?”
- Hashizume-mon was the main gate to the Ninomaru, where the feudal lord’s palace stood. It had a particularly high status and several distinctive features.
- Like the other two gates, it has a masugata layout, but its defensive enclosure is the largest of the three. It also had a guard station inside the inner gate.
- Another distinctive feature is the stone flooring inside the inner gate, made of Tomuro-ishi, a local stone quarried in the nearby mountains.
- Tomuro-ishi comes in two varieties, reddish-grey and bluish-grey, and its quarrying and use were controlled by the Kaga Domain.
- The stone was also used for the castle’s stone walls, where the two colours create a distinctive appearance.
- At Hashizume-mon, the paving stones are laid in the same pattern as those in front of the Ninomaru Palace, reflecting the gate’s high status.
- Unfortunately, although many people pass through this gate every day, most are so captivated by its heavy doors and timber framework that they hardly notice the stone flooring.
- I used to point it out from time to time, but I’ve gradually stopped mentioning it.
- You see, some overseas visitors are already tired of having to take their shoes off at one exhibition hall after another. They often say, “If I have to take my shoes off one more time, that’s it!”
- So if I tell them that these paving stones are as prestigious as those in front of the lord’s palace, they might well say, “Wait a minute! Do I have to take my shoes off here, too? In that case, I’m going home!”
“What are these holes /sama (for)?”
- These openings are known as ‘samā’ (loopholes), which were installed in various locations within Japanese castles for defensive purposes.
- They were typically built into castle walls or ramparts and used to attack enemies with bows and arrows or firearms.
- The ‘yazama’ (arrow slit) is generally elongated and rectangular in shape, and was primarily designed for firing arrows.
- Consequently, vertical space is provided to allow the archer to draw their bow and shoot.
- The ‘teppōzama’ (musket slit) is an opening designed for aiming and firing matchlock guns, and comes in various shapes, such as circular, triangular and square.
- Although the loopholes in the Hashizume Gate appear to be arrow slits in shape, they are not distinguished solely by their shape.
- As you can see, the outer side of the loopholes is narrow whilst the inner side is wide, thereby enhancing their defensive capabilities.
- Here, we have restored a mechanism known as a ‘hidden loophole’ (kakushi-zama), which is covered by the surface of the wall so that the loophole cannot be seen from the outside in peacetime.
- After explaining this feature to overseas guests time and time again, I sometimes worry they might start to see Japanese people as a little too cunning.
- “Watch out in Japan! Walls have ears—and some even have traps!”
