Set 1: Historical Background /
EN: One of the Main Enclosures of Kanazawa Castle
The Sannomaru was one of the major enclosures of Kanazawa Castle. The castle’s present layout took shape in the early Edo period, following a major fire. The Sannomaru formed part of the castle complex organized around the Ninomaru, which became the center of the domain’s government.

Set 2: Role in Domain Government /
EN: From Retainers’ Residences to Government Offices
In the early Edo period, residences of senior retainers stood in the Sannomaru. After the great fire in the early seventeenth century, government offices were established there. This reflects the Sannomaru’s role as an important administrative area within the castle, rather than merely a defensive enclosure.

Set 3: Position within the Castle /
EN: An Important Enclosure Guarded by Major Gates
The Sannomaru was connected to other parts of the castle through important gates, including Kahokumon and Ishikawa-mon. These gates controlled movement between the enclosures and formed part of the castle’s defensive system. Together with Hashizume-mon, they are known as the Three Great Gates of Kanazawa Castle.

“What was the purpose of this square?”

❶ Today, this open space is used for various events, but it was once home to samurai residences.

❷ Today, the buildings are gone, leaving this vast open space.

❸ During festivals, stalls sometimes line the square, while other events showcase traditional Japanese culture.

❹ Two notable events are falconry demonstrations and Takigi Noh, traditional Noh performances held by torchlight.

❺ The falconry demonstrations give visitors a glimpse of the falconry traditions once practiced by the feudal lords.

❻ Takigi Noh also has historical connections with the Noh traditions of the Kaga Domain.

❼ When no events are taking place, people can stroll across the lawn, sit down, or even lie down and relax.

❽ When I walk across this soft lawn with overseas guests, they sometimes exclaim, “It’s so spongy!”

❾ As a local guide, I take that as a compliment. But then I remember that “sponge” can also be a verb.

❿ So even today, we Kanazawa people are still sponging off the Maeda family!
