”What is the main attraction here?”

  1. EN: This is the only spot in Kenroku-en where people can enjoy a view of the scenery outside the garden—a place where they can experience the “panoramic view,” one of the garden’s Six Virtues.
  2. EN: Originally created as the private garden of the lord of Kanazawa, most of Kenroku-en was intentionally designed not to be visible from the outside.
  3. EN: Because of that, there are only a few places inside the garden where you can look outward, making this a rare spot where you can experience the “panoramic view” just as the lord once did.
  4. EN: Since you can take in a wide view of Kanazawa’s townscape from here, the lords may have literally looked down on the homes of their subordinates.
  5. EN: As a guide, I’m truly delighted to be able to welcome guests from many countries to such a special place.
  6. EN: After all, only a select group of VIP guests were allowed to stand here when the garden was first created.
  7. EN: When I weave that into my explanation, both I—the guide—and the guests listening tend to feel wonderful.
  8. EN: But after repeating this story countless times in this very spot, a certain overwhelming feeling gradually began to grow inside me.

“Why is there so much water in a garden on such high ground?”

  1. This garden is located on high ground, but surprisingly, it has an abundant supply of water.
  2. The secret lies in an ingenious irrigation canal known as the Tatsumi Irrigation Canal, which was completed in 1632, when Kanazawa Castle was undergoing major reconstruction.
  3. It was originally built to bring water from the upper reaches of the Sai River to Kanazawa Castle, about 11 kilometers away.
  4. Almost 200 years later, this water was also used to create Kenrokuen’s beautiful ponds, waterfalls, and winding streams.
  5. Interestingly, I rarely get questions about water sources at Kanazawa Castle or other parts of this garden. But here, at this viewpoint, I get asked about it quite often.
  6. That gave me an idea. Perhaps this would be a perfect place to teach children an important lesson about life!
  7. Some children grow up, become successful, and look beautiful, but forget how much their parents supported them along the way.
  8. So, I would bring those children here and tell them, “Just like this abundant water supply, your parents have supported your growth long before you became who you are today.”
  9. But then I realized it would probably be a waste of time. Standing here, children would be so captivated by this beautiful view that they wouldn’t listen to a word of my lecture!
  10. Then I suddenly had another idea. Wait! A rainy day would be perfect!
